Tanya holds a PhD in Dance Studies from York University and is a graduate of Canada’s National Ballet School Teacher Training Program. She has taught at the University of Toronto in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education since 2003. Tanya is teaching in the Department of Dance at York University and, after years of experience teaching ballet in private studios, she is thrilled to be a member of the incredible Pivot Dancer team. Tanya has presented her research at international conferences organized by renowned associations such as, International Association of Dance Medicine and Science, Dance Studies Association, National Dance Education Organization, Healthy Dancer Canada, World Dance Alliance and CORPS de Ballet International. Tanya’s publications can be found in journals including Research in Dance Education and Journal of Dance Education, as well as in the forthcoming anthology Ethical Dilemmas in Dance Education: Case Studies on Humanizing Dance Pedagogy.
Tanya’s research in student-teacher communication highlights issues central to healthy teaching practices and relationships such as, consent in physical interaction, increased student autonomy and dancers’ well-being. Tanya hopes to empower dancers, teachers and dance parents to create healthy, happy and productive dance environments.
